Hunger Relief
Hunger Relief addresses the immediate need to feed the hungry while attacking the long-term impact of malnutrition. Cross-Lines distributes approximately one million pounds of food each year through:
- Breakfasts served Monday through Friday at the Community Annex
- Hot lunch provided Monday through Friday by various churches and individuals at the Cross-Lines Community Annex
- Food pantry provides free groceries to qualified participants in emergency situations.
- Monthly commodity distribution provides groceries to the elderly, homebound and single mothers with children living in Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnson counties
- Brown bag lunches provided for clients to take to work.
- "Food For Your Family” provides free, bilingual nutrition and cooking classes to the community. Cross-Lines partners with students and staff from KU Medical Center to teach families about healthy eating habits and cooking on a budget. Six families have the opportunity to participate in the class for eight weeks. Families prepare two different recipes together in class, sample their meals, and take home leftovers. Each family leaves class with a few bags of groceries related to the week’s theme and recipes to try at home using those ingredients.
- Our Community Garden provides fresh vegetables which are an essential part of a healthy diet often missing from the tables of families living in poverty. Food grown in the Cross-Lines' garden is used in the free breakfast and lunch programs and it is distributed at the Cross-Lines Food Pantry during the growing season. Produce is also available for the community to purchase at low-cost. Visitors are welcome to tour the garden - just give us a call.
